I hope you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer relaxing, vacationing and spending time with your family. The summer months seem to always fly by and we are already getting ready for another school year. I am excited to be kicking the year off with all of you. As many of you know, Mrs. Liz Hollingsworth has retired after over 20 years as Carver Principal. We will miss her, but we are lucky that she will still be part of SMUSD. Her leadership, guidance and knowledge have helped shape Carver as we know it today. Tradition is very important to Carver families and we have been blessed with a new principal who is planning to stick with tradition. I would like to introduce Mr. Michael Lin as Carver's new principal. I was fortunate to get to know Mr. Lin while I served on the HMS executive board last year. He has many years of experience in both the corporate and academic world. His intelligence, knowledge and kindness have exceeded my expectations of what I was hoping for in a new principal at Carver. I know you will feel the same when you meet him. Carver is fortunate to have such a qualified individual as our principal. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Lin to our Carver family.
When I was choosing the theme for Carver PTA this year, I started to think about what makes Carver so special. Over the years as a Carver parent, I have been amazed by the dedication from our parents, teachers and staff. Everyone here not only works together, but supports each other as well. With a common goal in mind, we are making the future of Carver Bright. This year's PTA theme, "Carver Stars...Together We Shine!," reflects a community where everyone cares about the future of our children.
To continue fostering this spirit of participation and collaboration, I would like to invite each and every one of you to be a part of Carver PTA. Through the PTA's various fundraisers, we raise much needed money to help fund the art lab, computer lab, library, music program and science lab. The PTA's four largest fundraisers this year are Mixed Bag designs (fall fundraiser), Jog-a-thon, Parent Party and the Carver Carnival. Our Mixed Bag Design fundraiser will kick-off August 25th. You can purchase beautiful recyclable bags, gift wrap, household items and cookie dough. Our next fundraiser will be our first ever Jog-a-thon on Thursday, November 10th. Plan to sponsor and come cheer your child on! We will also be hosting our Parent Party on Saturday, March 4th. It will be held at the California Science Center where you will be enjoying the evening under the Space Shuttle Endeavour. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know other parents, support the school and have fun! At the end of the school year, we have one of our most cherished traditions here at Carver, the Carver Carnival on Saturday, April 29th. Each of the above fundraisers is important for our school to be able to sponsor the excellence we expect at Carver. Please support where you can and get involved.
One of the best ways to be a part of the Carver community is to volunteer. Volunteering offers you the opportunity to get to know other parents, teachers, staff and your child's classmates. There are so many ways to get involved. You can read in the library, assist in the classroom, be on a committee or chair an event. No matter what role you play here at Carver, you are a Star! Over the summer, many of our Executive Board members and Big Board members have been busy organizing, creating and preparing for many of our other events at Carver. We will be kicking the school year off with our Newcomer's Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 14th from 3-5pm at the Carver lunch courts. This is a special event for all new students and families to meet other families and get familiar with Carver school and the PTA. Monday, August 15th is a day you do not want to miss. Not only is it the first day of school, it is also the Volunteer Fair. The volunteer fair is a perfect opportunity to find ways to get involved. I hope to see you all there.
Please save the date for Carver's Back to School Night on Thursday, August 25th. You will hear from your child's teacher about what their goals and expectations are for the year. Carver PTA will also be hosting four coffees in August and September (New Parent Orientation, Chinese translation, TK-2nd grade and 3rd-5th grade) for parents to get more information about Carver, the community and what to expect for the upcoming school year. Please look at the Carver school website www.carverschool.us for dates and times. Make sure to mark your calendar for the Carver Family Picnic on Thursday, September 15th. This is a fun Carver tradition where you bring your entire family to have a picnic dinner and enjoy the company of other Carver families. I am excited to get to know all of you this year and if you ever need anything or have a question please don't hesitate to contact me. I am here for you. You can reach me by email at email@example.com.
As we get ready to start another school year I am thankful to be doing it with all of you. Working together towards the common goal of enriching the lives of our Carver students makes me proud to be part of this school. Our children are so fortunate to a be a part of the San Marino Unified School District and are so lucky to be at Carver Elementary school where everyone Shines!!
To a Bright Future, Nicolette Fuerst, PTA President
